Application of Boron Carbide Ceramics (B4C) in the Field of Bulletproof
Boron carbide ceramics are a high-performance material with high melting point, high hardness and low density, which makes it ideal for applications in bulletproof materials. Compared with traditional bulletproof materials, such as metal plate bulletproof materials, high-performance fiber composite bulletproof materials, combined bulletproof materials, boron carbide bulletproof ceramics have very significant advantages.
1. Boron carbide bulletproof armor
With its unique characteristics, boron carbide ceramics can effectively resist the attack of artillery shells and improve the protection ability. In the protection of light armored vehicles, such as key equipment projects, future main battle tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, air-dropped airborne vehicles, etc., boron carbide ceramics play a key role. Boron carbide ceramics are mainly used to attach armored components such as roofs, hatchcovers, exhaust plates, turret mounts, bullet-proof glass, pivot racks, and the relatively weak sides of tanks.
In addition, it is also used for armored protection of the web of gunships and ship superstructures. For example, boron carbide and Kevlar composite armor has been widely used in the passenger seat of the American Black Hawk helicopter; In the 1960s, boron carbide ceramics were incorporated into the cockpit floor, sidewall bulletproof panels and pilot seats of gunships.
2. Boron carbide bulletproof insert plate
Boron carbide ceramics have also been widely used in the manufacture of body armor. Hard bulletproof vests are mainly composed of composite materials such as metals and ceramics, and the density of boron carbide is the lowest in several commonly used bulletproof ceramics, and the elastic modulus is high, which makes it a good choice for bulletproof inserts.
In recent years, we continue to increase the depth and intensity of research on boron carbide ceramics, as well as increase the research on advanced practical molding process and sintering process technology, so that boron carbide products can be practical and further industrialized production in some high-tech fields. At the same time, the research on reducing the cost of boron carbide bulletproof ceramic material has strong necessity and broad application prospect.
